The major Japanese mobile operators were recently given the opportunity to see how Voice over LTE (VoLTE) works in practice at a Nokia Siemens Networks ‘eXperience day’ inTokyo. Nearly a hundred visitors were able to see the demonstrations of high-definition voice, chat and video with Quality of Service.
VoLTE with high-definition voice in practice with Renesas test terminals and PC client.
The demonstration showed how VoLTE works with Nokia Siemens Networks commercial hardware and described the standard VoLTE solution. Earlier in 2012, VoLTE was launched inKorea, while operators in other countries, includingJapan, have launched CS Fallback as an evolution step towards VoLTE.
The high penetration of LTE-capable smartphones inJapancertainly increases demand for LTE network coverage and creates a good potential market for VoLTE. With competition so tight, there is pressure to achieve high quality networks and services when launching VoLTE.
This is why, during the eXperience day, Japanese operators were particularly keen to see the quality of high-definition voice for themselves, as well as a fast call setup time. High-definition voice quality makes a major difference in LTE networks, while fast call setup time allows an immediate switch between communication methods, say from chat to voice. Nokia Siemens Networks was able to prove both these criteria, even with core and radio networks separated by as much as 8,000 km.

Based on the discussions at the event, it is clear that operators can benefit greatly from Nokia Siemens Networks’ understanding of networks, for example the facts that influence a VoLTE launch. The demonstration also proved that VoLTE will be the future technology for voice and a basis for other communication services such as Rich Communication Suite (RCS).
