Nokia Siemens Networks’ contribution to femtocell standards was honored at this week’s Femtocells World Summit 2011 in London.

The award recognizes the company’s contribution to 3GPP Releases 10 and 11 and its enhancements to mobility and interference management.

“We have always been an active driver of femtocell standardization initiatives,” said Timo Hyppölä, head of 3G Femto product management, Nokia Siemens Networks, at the show in London. “We understood early on the importance of standards to femtocell adoption, and the necessity of open Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) supply to enable continuous innovation and cost evolution. A further proof point of our capabilities is our deployment of the industry’s first 3GPP-compliant femto for Mosaic Telecom, a major rural service provider in the USA, as well as our selection by several other operators.”

Femtocells are an excellent tool to buil­­d targeted coverage and capacity in specific locations such as very densely or sparsely populated areas. An operator can, for instance, enable high data throughput in coverage-challenged households or enterprises by offloading traffic from the macro network to small cells such as femtocells. Implementation of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Femto enables operators to offer new family bundles and home zone tariffs. This helps improve user experience through both enhanced service quality and lowered monthly bills.

The Femto Forum’s Femtocell Industry Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the femtocell industry. Open to all, the awards are judged independent of the Femto Forum by a panel of distinguished analysts, journalists and industry experts. The Femto Forum is a not-for-profit membership organization founded in 2007 to promote femtocell deployment worldwide.
